Sepex motor testing - no continuity between A1 and A2
I am fearing the worst again. My motor has been behaving very erratic, now it won't go at all. Solenoid clicks, battery voltage is good. No error codes on Alltrax controller.
I did the continuity test on the motor by disconnecting all the cables on the motor. I have continuity between F1 and F2. There is NO continuity between A1 and A2. What does no continuity between A1 and A2 mean? Any more troubleshooting I can do? |

Usually means the brushes are toast. The motor would have to come out and be disassembled to see what's going on inside. Usually a relatively easy fix, but if the commutator is chewed up/grooved then it will need to be machined by a shop before you install new brushes.

Thanks. It was the brushes. One of the wires completely came off the brush. I am not sure what to order for a replacement. This is a D&D motor upgraded by EMP.

Re: Sepex motor testing - no continuity between A1 and A2
That looks like a burned brush. How do the others look?
That could be caused by armature stall or just too many amps going through the brush wires. Often that means that the motor isn't quite correctly suited to what you're doing with the cart, or that you have the wrong field map in the controller, or the controller is set to feed too many amps to the motor. If EMP built it, send it back to them to have it repaired and get their take on why it failed. I'm sure they would like to take a peek and see if there is something that could be changed to help prolong the life of the motor. |

Re: Sepex motor testing - no continuity between A1 and A2
All the others look fine. I emailed the same photo to EMP. They sent me the fieldmap when I got the motor....and then they tweaked it a little. That was about 2 years ago.
Not sure what I did wrong. I try to baby it. Don't have tall tires and stay on the road. I drive fast (27 mph), but I don't go super slow for a long time. I don't tow anything. I will see what they say....but I don't want to sink any more money into DC motors. Next money will go to AC system. |
