For a 6v battery to have equal power to a 12, the plates would have to be heavier because they would have to carry double the current (power = current X voltage). I am not familiar with 6v battery ratings or the term "power density" which seems to imply how much power a battery provides relative to its physical size or weight or both, can you give a 6 to 12v comparison? Systems that rely on solar charging need batteries that can store more power to get them by on cloudy days when they might not be provided a full charge. The alternator idea sounds good.
