A fuse does not protect from over heating, it just cuts the power in the case of a short. There are thermal fuses that will detect temperature,or over temperature, but that is not what your trying to do here.

The wire should not burn before the instrument. When a transistor shorts out in the radio the fuse should blow. This is well before the wire gets hot. If you put a 50 amp fuse on 16 gauge wire and get a short the wire will likely burn before the fuse blows. Not good. You don't have to have the max size fuse for the wire, but should never out fuse the wire.

Nothing wrong with using a breaker panel instead if you want to get fancy

Easy way to ck is to goggle the power requirements of the equipment you will be running. If your phone uses 3amps and a radio draws 10, then you will have to use the larger size or you will constantly blow fuses. In this example you will have to ensure that the charger you are using is equipped with the proper size fuse (these are typically in the part of the charger that plugs into the cig lighter). Hope that helps.

So a 55W bulb at 12V pulls 4.58 amps...
