Rebuilding a FE 290
I have a '93 Carryall 2 with a FE290
The engine works well, but burns oil and is tired. I use the cart for a summertime business and have the entire winter to refresh or replace the engine. I have checked several options. 1 - Send it to Texas where a company will rebuild it and send it back. $550 plus shipping. 2 - Rebuild it myself - Worst case, parts would run $1,600 from Buggies Unlimited. 3 - Replace it with new. Reluctant to just drop in another engine that isn't a direct-fit, bolt in application. Too many change this, cut that, add another piece! Now, each has it's pros and cons. Since this is used at my business, I need a cart that just WORKS. I don't want a quick fix, band-aid job that will not last. And, I don't want to spend 2K either. Even a new big block needs a $1,000 install kit. I could sell my cart and upgrade to a newer one. Any thoughts or experience with doing a rebuild? What did it cost in the end? Were parts easily available? Please help me understand what I might be getting in to! |

Re: Rebuilding a FE 290
I have gotten several rebuilt engines from Motors and more in Georgia. Out of the dozens I have replaced for customers I have had only one issue.

Re: Rebuilding a FE 290
We have used J & M Golf Carts out of Evans Georgia. Similar to cruisinkruty's experience we've done dozens and only had one with issues. Even that one was quickly swapped out.

Call and get a quote from Carts Parts Plus for a brand new FE350.
I have a '93 Club Car and went through the same thing. |

Re: Rebuilding a FE 290
So, what I'm hearing is that rebuilding my motor is NOT the way to go?
I'll contact the companies suggested. Thanks for the info! |

Re: Rebuilding a FE 290
Those two companies sell rebuilt motors. You send in your core and they ship you one that they have rebuilt. I would buy a rebuilt one over doing it yourself.

Re: Rebuilding a FE 290
Although, I am considering the 460CC drop-in kit from Vegas Carts.
At $1350 delivered, I'd like the added HP and a brand-new engine! |

Do you need the cart to be stock quiet?
