Default Need work, are they ripping us off?

My 94 ezgo was running rich and now it won't start. Took it to a local cart repair and asked them to look it over since the steering was sloppy too. Are these labor times realistic?!?

-replace belt, timing & 2 spark plugs: 2.5 hrs labor (and parts) $290 (really?!)
-steering needed spindle pin bolt & brushing spindle: 1.5 hrs labor, $184
-brake shoe kit, drum /hub assembly: 2 hrs labor and parts $380

So basically saying its 6 hrs to do all this work at $85/hr. - $510 for labor?

I just don't want to get ripped off...any thoughts?

Drive inland 1 hour and find someone who charges realistic rates to local folks. This guy is quoting you seaside country club rates.

2 hours for brakes is way too much. I can do those brakes in 45 minutes without rushing... Ask if you had to pay for the mechanic to go out to lunch? I mean, an hour at each wheel? If I pulled the axles and changed the bearings and seals I wouldn't be that long. Okay, find a faster mechanic

Anyone know a mechanic in Nor Cal? The good news is that all we owe is $100...so they are going to have to do some magic to get our business... Grrrr

Besides the SF Bay area, where are you located and how far will you take your cart to get it fixed?
Was it an Ezgo dealer you took your cart to?
Care to name the shop?

It's at Nicks in Benicia....but normally its in Napa...I guess we are just exploring our options and haven't thought about dragging it elsewhere. Paid a lot for the cart, weren't looking to sink a grand into it! Ugh....

Nick's is the Club Car/Star/Polaris dealer in the area.
Here are a couple of Ezgo guys to try:
AJ Golf in San Jose 408-274-7742
AltaQuip in Concord 925-609-6307
Bay Area Golf in Martinez 925-229-0291
All Cal Golf in Martinez 925-788-5783
All of them should be able to give you a rough estimate over the phone.

That whole job should cost no more than US$200.They are not working on a Ferrari or a Lambo.
