Hi --

You might look at a ezgo RXV.

With stock or close to stock wheels they are hands down the best performing electric golf carts on hills.

Stock -- NO MODS -- 19.5 mph top speed, Climbs hills with ease.
AC motor does not have to be set up for TORQUE or SPEED.. BOTH are available

You may be able to build a dc cart to match-- (i have not seen one that would)

But i doubt it would cost less than a nice RXV.

Maybe you could DEMO one?

Good Luck !!!

All batteries are new and the cart is in excellent condition. The guy at the local shop says the only way to get more torque is to buy a new engine, controller, cables, etc. which he estimated would cost $1,200+-. Is this truly my only option? Thanks in advance for your insight.
Never trust guys at cart shops that refer to electric motors as engines.

Setting that aside, if you change the phrase "the only way" to the phrase "one of the ways", his statement is correct.

There are many way of getting more torque from a cart with a series DC motor.

That is a really steep hill, so it may take some doing, but lets find out what we are working with first.

What size tires are on the cart?
Tires taller than 18" increases the cart's speed, but reduces its acceleration and hill climbing ability.

After a hard run, are any of the high current cables/connections, or the F/R switch, hot?
If so, energy that ought to be going to the motor is being wasted.

How many AH capacity are the new batteries?
225AH is standard for a 36V battery pack.

What is the battery pack voltage when climbing a mild hill?
New doesn't necessarily mean good, you might have a weak battery, or one dropping out under load.

------------
The trick is to get your cart operating at, or near, its optimal efficiency as is; And then upgrade as needed to get it to do what you want it to do.

Of course, while fixing the existing deficiencies, keep in mind what the end goal is and use replacement parts that will meet that goal.

Overkill is underrated.
