Mismatch on the year and body style? I don't believe the TXT body style came out until 1996.

The XI-500 has a Curtis 1204/5 controller (See attached)

I suspected that might have been what happened.

A 1996 TXT with series drive has a Curtis 1206 controller. Even if you could wire it in, the throttle type is different. (XI-500 has a 0-5K throttle and the TXT series has a ITS)

You have a 1205-112 controller, which is 400A that operates with a 24V to 36V battery pack and has a 0-5KΩ throttle input.

You can find a 1204-112, which has the same specs except it only passes 275A to the motor, reducing the cart's torque by about 30%.

You also have the option of upgrading to Alltrax SPM or SR controllers, which are user programmable and available from 200A to 800A and work at 36V, 42V and 48V if you decide to up the pack voltage for better performance.

Attached is the Curtis 1204/1205 manual.
Last page lists the specs on the various model number suffixes.
Section-5 is Troubleshooting and starts on page-25.
Also contains theory of operation and other info.
