1993 EZGO Marathon 48v conversion?

Hello everyone, I just got a 1993 marathon which I have been working on it.
I would like to gain more power and speed, I have been reading about going 48v and upgrading the speed controller and so for, I'm not ready to spend 800 dollars in parts at once so, what should be my first step?
Battery's are 3months old, and all wires are 4ga.
I have a budget of $400.00 to start

Looks like original cables. I would start by replacing all of the battery and motor cables with new larger gauge wire.

Got light? Wow, that is a lot of light bar!

I put 1 xtra battery in the bagwell area and ran my Marathon for 6 months on 42V with the stock control that you have. I gave a little bit more torque and speed.
Then I upgraded to a 500amp controller and 48Volts later on.

The replacement of all or your wires with 2ga will have to be done soon also.

Ultimately this is what you want to end up with :

High torque Admiral B1 motor or equivalent
Alltrax 48500 controller (there is no equivalent)
400 super duty solenoid ( 1-3 models available )
2g cables throughout - quality is all over the map
HD F&R (cheap and good models available)
or Super duty 400a Reversing contactor kit.

Thank you very much for all the info, in regards of the wires going to the motor, should use 2g or 4g, and if I put the one extra battery do you guy have any diagram on how to connect it.

Here is what I did on my 89 Marathon as I have been doing upgrades in stages over last few years. All parts came from Scotty B
Stage 1:
500 Amp Alltrax, HD solenoid, HD FWD/Rev switch, 2 gauge cables

Stage 2:
48 volt

Stage 3(Not done):
Motor upgrade

Hello Scotty,
I'm thinking of getting the 48500 controller to start, is there something else that I would need to get to install this controller and make it work, and I would probably need some help with the installation wiring if you guys don't mind.
I would like to go on stage by stage so I don't kill my budget lol, thanks a lot. [emoji106]

How much speed did you pick up going to 48 volt. Do the 8 volt batteries fit in the same place as the 6 volt? Or did you add two more to the tray in the back?

48v will get you 33% speed increase over 36v (33% more volts). Controller alone will gain you no speed, but a nice increase in torque, but the big thing is that it's ready for 48v. But none of the stuff mentioned here will gain you any speed AND fit in a $400 budget, except for just adding one battery to your stock system (which will gain you 16.5% more speed). If you plan on increasing voltage while using your current battery pack, better do it soon while these batteries are still young. Not much you can do with $400, except do upgrades to get you ready for spending more money for real results.
