Default 36v or 48v Questions

Hi All,

I have a 1998 Jacobson Workhorse 36V cart I aquired. It has 6 6v batteries in it. They are shot. I can get a great deal on some 8v batteries. The cart has an aftermarket 550 Amp controller in it (Controller has a sticker that says "HT Electric Inc, Tuscon, AZ"), not sure on the motor. I'm guessing it's aftermarket too, but I need to dig deeper into it. My question is can I throw 6 8v batteries in it and still run it as is a 36v cart or do I need to change the complete set-up to make it work? Appreciate any advise, I'm new to the electric game.

Thanks.

Stretch "Chris"

Almost all of the controllers say 36 or 48v on them somewhere. Assuming a series motor, it will work on 48v to produce 33% more speed and torque.

To answer your second question you probably could put 5/8v in it and run on 40v regardless of the controller's rating but how would you charge it !?
Bottom line, investigate or google research your controller model more and hope you find it's 48v compatible, then get a 48v solenoid and charger

I'm betting he has a Alltrax. I have seen the "HT electric" before, they are Alltrax stuff before Nivel bought "High torque electric" / Luna. To answer the original question, yes, the controller will handle 48v. The solenoid needs to be upgraded to a 48v unit. The charger will obviously need to be a 48v model also. If all the rest of the parts are stock, you will see failures of F&R parts and reduced life of cables if they are all old stock parts. Time to build up the basics, like all cables & F&R parts. ( Any cable not upgraded is the new weakest part, do ALL of them). Any old 6ga cable shall now be at least a 4ga cable.

What about installing 6x8volt batteries and using a 48 volt charger but only use 5 batteries as the main pack? would that work? i was thinking on trying this on one of my PDS carts as i think the motor/controller/solenoid would probably handle 40v but not 48v until i can buy the upgrade i would like.
