Default 2004 EZGO TXT 36v questions

Just traded for this cart. I believe it to be 2004 as the motor has 2004 year on it, being a DE2-4007. Cart has 6" lift, 22" innova tires, non-folding rear seat, headlights and taillights. This is my first golf cart so there will be a ton of dumb questions. The range at this time is absolute crap...less than 3 miles gets me down to 60% (estimate). The batteries are about 3 years 8-9 month old Exide 186 AH. I have been able to hit 18mph with myself and two of my young sons onboard on flat level ground.

I have been looking at those Duracell 220 AH batteries as it appears these are done for. I haven't gotten to look at the controller yet but I'm assuming it may have the red freedom plug?

Any and all help is welcomed!

Welcome to the golf cart world. If this is a 36v cart your best performance option may be 48 volt operation. The first steps to a successful upgrade is to A. identify which drive system the cart has in it and , B. Identify the use in terms of load, terrain, and desired speed.
Go here to learn how to ID the drive system and what which upgrades will do for the cart. > http://www.cartsunlimited.net/upgrade-suggestions.html

It’s a sepex drive. Found a good deal on Trojan batteries for $688 for a set!

2004 Sepex is a PDS drive system. This cart will respond very well to the Alltrax XCT48400 control and HD solenoid upgrade. Power will increase 30-35% and top speed on stock (18") tires will be 22-23 mph. Taller tires will increase top speed. More voltage (6/7v = 42v) will increase both power and top speed results by 15%. Have fun and be safe

That would be a good price in my area if you are talking about a set of T-105. I just bought a set for $813 including tax, and that was cheaper than the other places in driving distance. Be sure that they aren't selling you a lower grade; Trojan makes another series that doesn't have as much capacity.

Is the stock powerwise charger any good? Is it worth it to upgrade the charger?

It's fine, but a charger that goes into "float" mode would probably give you better life, unless you unplug then replug your charger into your cart once a week. Batteries self discharge, and a float charger will keep them at 100% all the time.

I assume you read up on proper break-in at http://www.cartsunlimited.net/ ? Break them in properly, charge them after EVERY use, and restart the charger at least once a week and that charger will do fine. I bought a float mode charger, so I don't have to do anything, even if I don't ride for several months. It's also ideal for folks who leave their carts unattended for weeks or months at a time.
