G1 won't fire, dry plug
Hey all, new to the forum but not new to the business end of a wrench.
I have a G1 2 stroker that won't run. The carb appears to be clean, fuel/air mixture screw in good shape and backed off 1.5 turns from snug. It tries to fire but seems starved of fuel, if I choke it and let off it runs for a few seconds then goes back to a pop here and there. The plug is dry, so it isn't flooded, and I really think it's starved of fuel. Any suggestions on what to check next? I plan on pulling the carb to make darn sure a jet isn't plugged. I do know the fuel pump is working and the fuel is making it to the carb. I also pumped off over 4 gallons of some nicely varnished fuel and have clean new fuel in it. Thanks in advance for the help. |

Pull the carb and clean it really really well. Blow out every passage you can find with compressed air afterwards. I'd also replace the fuel lines and filter(s) to make sure that there's nothing left over that will blow gunk into your newly cleaned carb. It may be a hassle, but if all you did was pump out the old gas and pour in fresh, remove the tank, dump anything that's in it, and clean out the tank really well. I can guarantee there's still nasty gunk down in the bottom that wasn't pumped out. The only way to get it out is to pull the tank and clean it. I use a bottle of TSP and plain old water. Maybe drop a length of chain in there and shake it really well to agitate the goop at the bottom, the TSP will eat it up. Then dump it out, rinse it, and then I just let the hose run inside the tank for a half hour or so to flush out anything else in there. then just dump it, let it dry in the sun for a few hours and should be good to go. Are you running premix or using the oil injection? If using the oil injection, I would block it off and remove it, and just run premix. The only time you find out the oil injection pump quit working is when the engine fails due to no oil. not usually much notice otherwise. |

Thanks! I will do that later, as I don't have time during the week.
On the Oil injection side, what premix ratio do you use/recommend? |

Also, bad crank seals will cause bad lean condition (which will eventually burn up the motor). Whats your compression?

Re: G1 won't fire, dry plug
I finally got time to take a look at this. I installed new seals on the crank, both had damage/wear. After getting it all back together it still has the same issue, will try to fire up but won't go. I'm running it from an auxiliary fuel supply right now, but would think gravity feeding the carb would be fine, am I wrong? It will spit and sputter but just won't fire off. Frustrating me a lot because this thing drove on to my trailer fine and it's had issues ever since I got it home. Good spark, fuel and compression and just won't take off. Any further help would be appreciated a lot.

Yank the muffler and see if that helps things.
Squirt some fuel directly into the cylinder and see if that gets you a few combustion cycles. For that matter, pull the fuel line off of the carb and turn the motor over. That fuel pump should be squirting out a surprising about of fuel. Personally, I run electric pumps on my carts as I am not crazy about the mechanic ones but there are differing opinions on that conversion. |

Re: G1 won't fire, dry plug
Pull the line off the carb and see if it's pumping fuel out.
If it's not, check the fuel pump mounted on the transaxle. If you had varnish in the tank, I'm betting that fuel pump is all gunked up. Sometimes the stock pumps can be cleaned, but I just replaced mine with a Mikuni from Briggs, can be bought for less than $20 online. BTW sometimes gravity isn't enough if the carb is dirty, the needle valve is sticky, or the lines are gunked. There could be a hunk of goo in there somewhere blocking the fuel. |

The flange that’s attached to the engine that the carburetor goes into, should it have a gasket between the motor and the flange or can you just snug it up.

I think we're on to something with the fuel pump. It's barely spurting out, I am going to run new lines and go through the carb again. I did have a new briggs pump but didn't get it on there last night, so I will probably use that one in case its contaminated.
