1984 Gas Ez-go engine swap?
Hey guys, I recently bought a 1984 ezgo marathon as a "fix it up" project. I have little to no experience with golf carts, but Im learning quickly. I was wondering what your thoughts were on trying to swap the 9 hp 2-cyle robin engine ( robin ec25-2pg)for a BIGGER engine (I was looking at the vrx625?). The only thing I want is to keep is the ability to go in reverse. And more hp of course. Any thoughts or recommendations on what engine I should use? Does it HAVE to be a 2 cyle engine that goes back in?

If you go with that engine you would need a differential from a 91 or newer to have reverse

So what options are there for upgrading the engine? Is there anyone that makes a good 2 stroke motor with more than 9 hp?

I'm pretty sure for ANY engine swap youd need a 91+ rear axle. I believe your motor mounts sideways.
If your current engine is in decent operating condition, youd be better off running the throttle cable straight to the carb to bypass the governor, and maybe refresh your engine. A new top end, mill the head down a little bit for a compression bump, and some port work it will run circles around most 4 stroke engines you could swap in. |

Some people here swapped in single cylinder snowmobile engine in and got them running with forward and reverse BUT a high degree of thought and fab work went into these swaps. Dig around the sled section for info on the particulars.

Re: 1984 Gas Ez-go engine swap?
The end goal is to have a cart that is so fast its goofy. Id like to go at least 25 mph. I dont care to do fab work. Ive got metal work tools for days. And a great supply of steel. I just want to do order as few larts as possible. I think a transaxle would be INSANELY expensive. So im try to save costs. I dont care to shell put cash for a motor though, as I could always swap that to another cart
