Default 2006 G22 Leaking Oil and Smoking

Golf cart smokes when you first start it up especially after going down hill, stopping, then starting. Took the carb off and didnt see anything obvious like the choke being stuck. Found some oil/gas in the air filter box. After running the cart for a while you will see oil on the ground below it, cant quite tell where it is leaking from. The oil was full then after running for a while oil is only halfway up the dipstick. Any ideas?

Well, you gotta figure out where the oil is leaking from. Maybe the valve cover gasket. Remove, disassemble and clean the carb. Oil in the airbox is often a sign of a bad needle/float valve in the carb. Replace it while you have the carb apart. #16 in the pic. Do not overfill the crankcase. 1 qt only.

Thanks I will buy that part and replace it. One thing I forgot to mention is that the cart seems to run really hot.

Replace #12, o-ring, also. Remove the plastic shrouding and clean the debris from around the cylinder head cooling fins...

Well I had a feeling that I had a bad head gasket, so I took the engine apart only to realize the head gasket was fine, at least I was able to clean the engine real good. I guess it must be the carb...

I've yet to see a yamaha engine from the factory (that someone hasn't "rebuilt") ever blow a head gasket. I been at this since 2007 (and yamaha training certified). I've seen lots of stuff that "wasnt supposed to happen", but blown head gaskets is not their failure.

I'm betting valve cover. Doesn't explain why it smokes, unless it's dripping onto the outside of the exhaust. You could have a bad ring or valve seal if the engine smokes from the inside of the exhaust pipe.

Its definitely smoking by from inside the engine.

Also, is that steel wool looking stuff in the valve cover normal?

Yeah that's for the engine vapors to condense on. Think oily steam. It collects on that material then drips back down into the valve cover. Your stove might have some in your kitchen if you have a fan above the stove. Look up in there, usually little square panels that pop out. All commercial kitchens have them. Basically it acts like a filter for vapors and airborne oils.
