Default Robin 295CC rebuilt not starting

I have an Ezgo TXT I recently did a frame down rebuild on. Bought a rebuilt Robins Pre MCI 4stroke for the cart. Have everything back together and can not get the engine to run properly.

Symptoms:
Starter generator turns motor but will not fire consistently, does backfire occasionally. Engine sounds like it will fire with almost no throttle, but is more surging and never really fires on its on. Exhaust does get hot and plugs get hot from attempting to start. There is spark on both plugs. compression is 170.

Troubleshooting:
Have checked coil (its a new coil), both plugs spark, Pulser coil reads 19.2 and produces .5 volt ac when engine cranked with generator, swapped a known good coil and ignitor from a running cart, no change and replace carb. Nothing has helped. I have tripled checked all the wiring connections, ensured all grounds from battery to frame to engine and coll bracket are clean. As I said this is a complete rebuild, everything is clean.

Im at a lose for what to do from here. I feel like Ive covered all the basics. Cart has been being rebuilt for about 3 months, no battery in it, Start/generator was also rebuilt with new brushes and bearings. Any clues would be appreciated.

Well, first thing I would verify is which ignitor you are using. What year is the original cart? You said pre-MCI engine. If your ignitor has a connector on top, it is an MCI ignitor and will give you exactly the symptoms you are running into. If it has several wires extending out, it should be pre-MCI and should work with that engine. You indicated everything else came from a running cart. The only other item would be timing. If you didn't re-build it, maybe the timing is off. Pull the clutch and the timing belt cover...make sure the timing gears are lined up.

Well thanks very much! I didnt realize the ignitors were different on the premci and mci engines. I do have a premci engine and an mci ignitor. Im glad to have a confirmed issue to resolve. Ill take a look at how to rewire the harness and buy an mci ignitor.

Thanks again I really appreciate it!
