ScottyB and Dougmcp, thank you both very much for your help and insights.

I purchased the cart for next to nothing ($450) since the guy thought it wasn't worth anything as it wasn't running. He figured the charger was worth more than the cart at the time. So if I do end up frying the solenoid's then I'm not out much money since I'll have to replace them anyways to properly convert with a controller, pbox, etc... for additional performance gains down the road.

Of course safety is important and I prefer not to melt my backside to the seat or pull a granny and run the cart thru the back of the garage either, but I now have the knowledge in hand to move forward.

Thanks again for everyone's input and help.

This forum rocks!

Hey Gsmart,

This is a bit late... I also have a 1981 club car (A81) that I picked up from a guy for cheap who didn’t think it would work, and like you I plan on just tooling around my hood’ with the kids or for social cruising. Out of curiosity, what did you end up going with for your swap outs? I assume you got rid of the resistor coils and went to a MCOR of some sort? Did you have to get a new pedal assembly, etc? I was hoping to switch mine to lithium but I assume a lot of the swaps are similar... just curious, I don’t wan at to spend a new cart price on an old girl.
