You can ask him if he'd rather install a new one, or live without one. Mine was over 10 years old when the first one died, so I figured just replacing it wasn't too expensive, spread out over 10 years. The second one died so soon, I just bypassed it.

I drive mine hard, so I may have only gotten several years out of each one. Driving like a little old lady may let them last a lot longer. It's a glass magnetic switch, potted in a small plastic case. The glass breaks and prevents the switch from closing if you're lucky. Mine both died while charging, so I didn't have to walk. It's also possible for the broken glass to bounce around and force the contacts open, leaving you stranded.
