Cheap buy
I came across a "deal" today I couldn't pass up. 1987 Marathon for $100. The guy said it runs but only goes on the level or down hill. He said he believes it the clutch. I didn't get it running but it sat all winter. It is a two stroke from what I've read.

Re: Cheap buy
That was a great deal. Measure the width of the drive belt. Inch, and three sixteenths is new. Anything less than an inch is junk.
Jack up the wheels, and watch the operation of the clutches for full travel. Grab the plates of the secondary clutch. Loose, and floppy is bad. Golfcartking has them for $200. This is the manual that you can use. |

Re: Cheap buy
Thanks for the info! The guy I bought it from put a new belt on it. The old one was real bad. It lays on the floor of the cart. Another thing that's odd is as soon as you turn the key it trys to start without pushing the pedal.

Re: Cheap buy
Sounds like somebody has done some modifying.
The key switch is hooked in series with the pedal switch, and the neutral safety switch. All three have to make contact for the solenoid to activate. I just don't see both switches welding themselves in the closed position. That means somebody most likely bypassed them to make the cart idle. That would have been a dumb thing to do, but it has been done before. This is the diagram showing all three switches plus the reverse buzzer switch. The neutral switch is located on the passenger side of the FnR switch. The reverse buzzer switch is on the driver's side. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/gas-e...3pg-carts.html This is the actual diagram. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...n-retrofit.jpg |

Re: Cheap buy
So the boy and I got the flatbed off it and pressure washed it, needs some body work, but all in all not that bad. I can't get it started, I have good spark and fuel, even tried spraying a little starter fluid in the carb, doesn't even try. Where a good place to start trouble shooting?

Re: Cheap buy
Doesn't even try with starter fluid........... Crankshaft seals.
But wait, there's more. Start with a compression check. 120 psi is new. 100 is acceptable. |

Re: Cheap buy
Finally got it to start on starter fluid but carb won't take fuel, pulled line from fuel pump and gas does flow when cranking motor, pulled carb and cleaned, but want to install new filter and try new gas before tring to fire it up again.

Re: Cheap buy
I'm thinking the fuel pump might be bad, it seems to run ok, but isn't sucking fuel from the tank. I replaced the fuel filter and went through and cleaned the carb. Also sounds like a something is knocking or tapping metal, I'm not sure if it's coming from the motor or the drive clutch.
