Just saw this thread! This was over my head from the very start, Sprid!

Joe, that was a clever way of finding the problem!! I probably would have guessed it was a loose flywheel, or crank trigger situation, (whatever Yamaha calls them).
Anyway, good find!!

Yaknow, I'd check that ALL ground connections are clean and tight! And NO grounds go the frame. Need to ground to the battery or to the ground lug on starter!!

OMG so many years of playing/guessing/cussing/drinking all solved with a little squeeze!!

Sorry late to the party, but great trouble shooting Unfortunatly Yamaha TCI's are not checkable. You check all other ignition sytem parts and if they check good, bad TCI. Useually the go bad after running the car for awhile, then when cooled down, they work again. Part # JN3-82305-00-00 has a suggested retail of 210.49. Might do a web search for that part #, But I would not buy an aftermarket one, Try to find an OEM one for the best price.

I have to figure out if I can use my TCI on the clone, if not I'll be pedaling that sucker for cash lol. I really want to because it has advance built in, and zero advance at idle for easy generator starting.

There must be something loose inside of these things...bad solder joint,something.

When I get the cash to buy a new one I will be cutting this one open.

I guess my spring clamps arent as strong as Mr Smiths. I ended up using a hose clamp and 2 small blocks of wood to give it the squeeze...
