Default Suspected broken timing belt, advice, info, thanks

Got around to wrenching on a Marathon/Robins 295 I bought as a basket case and found the cam is not turning. I was going to adjust the valves when I discovered the problem. Is this an interference type engine or is there a chance the valves may have survived? I stopped working on it till I decide whether this is a worthwhile project or not. I'm hoping for any info or advice on what I should do, repair/replace engine, sell. I can get what I have in it but this cart would be just right for how I plan to use it. THANKS

I've had several belt issue engines and always spared the valves.
Maybe I was lucky, I didn't think those engines had that much lift in the cam.
You could always hand rotate the cam and crank and do a simple blow by test.

Thanks! I've got to round up the pieces needed to configure a puller so I can see exactly what's going on under the belt cover and go from there. I'm thinking the valves may be ok but it won't take much to do a compression test a see how things check.

My guess is you lost oil pressure to the cam bearings, and it froze up, or partially froze up the cam in the head. Regardless of what happened to the valves, it is likely the head is done for without some machining. Usually, when the cam seizes or binds up in the bearings, its the reason the timing belt breaks.

That gives me something to look for. If that's the case then I may just sell it and find something else or bite the bullet and replace the motor. THANKS

Give it a good going over, Belts also get old and break, hope for the best.
Keep us posted on what you find.
And if you are going to keep it buy a clutch puller tool.

I'm going to check it out a little more but I'm thinking rebuild it anyway and be done. I've found there's a place near me that rebuilds them for about $650. Has anybody dealt with Motors and More in Appling Ga? They're telling me 2-3 weeks after I take them the core they can have it done.

Thanks

If JP is correct about the cam seizing, Motors and more's price will more than double. check the cam before sending it in.

I was wondering about that. Oiling problems with anything is always bad news. I hope to get it the rest of the way apart by the weekend. I'll end this project if that's the case.

You should be able to turn the camshaft by hand or with a pair of pliers just by opening the valve cover. If the belt is broken it will have some resistance from the valve springs but shouldn’t be *that* hard to turn
