ez go workhorse voltage at ignition coil

With only a test light I get voltage on the + positive side of the coil in other words the test light lights up Now here is my question now this test is of course being done when the pedal is depressed should I get voltage on the - negative side of the ignition coil I can only get the light to light up when the test light is on the red positive side of coil and not the negative side is this normal or is something definitly wrong please help THANKS
