G1 only starts when I switch quickly from reverse to forward. Possible CDI problem??

I have no idea if this is true or not but a cart guy I knew, long since dead, told me that the timing difference was due to cylnders being actually just a bit offset on the crankcase to allow for more power in forward than in reverse. Hence, the timing is affected as well as the crank approach angle would be different in forward and reverse. Not sure if that's true or just the ramblings of an old school cart mechani, though. Either way, I am too dumb to speak to the mechanics of it. I know old school Harley carts require to be timed in forward and reverse so there is something to it.
