Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
I have a 1986 G1 with a Honda Clone engine in it. (So no Reverse) I usually drive it forward into the garage the push it backward when I take it out again. I installed a starter generator. Now the rear end locks up and I cannot push it. Jacked up rear axle and wheels turn in opposite directions. No brake problems. I know electric carts have tow switches, but this is a gas cart. When I push it, I do have the key out and the cart is totally turned off. It drives great and this is the only issue I have. Any help or ideas out there?

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
On the stock G1, the primary clutch has a bearing in the center between the halves that lets the rear axle/secondary pulley/belt turn when the cart is pushed. I'm not sure but sounds like you don't have this on the chonda engine or it's stuck.

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
I am able to just jack up one side with a floor jack and roll it right out. Both tires on the ground, won't budge.

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
Yeah, that's the differential action working. If you took the belt off too, it would roll with both wheels on the floor. You need to look at the primary (engine) clutch to see why the belt won't freewheel on it. Or maybe it was never able to freewheel and was turning the engine backwards when you pushed it backwards out of the garage. The starter generator may be keeping the engine from spinning easily. This could also be your issue.

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
Thank You, I imagine that's correct. I never had the problem before except on occasion it would catch. I could always bounce it out though. Disconnected the starter generator spins freely in both directions. The clutch must not be opening all the way. One question. Is there really enough compression in a small engine like that (12HP) to keep me from rolling cart and turning that shaft?

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
Possibly. At rest, the gear ratio of the pulleys is super low from engine to axle and from axle to engine it's super high gear so you are at a disadvantage pushing

Re: Yamaha G1 - cannot push cart
this is why I hate that my 80 G1 has a comet clutch. super hard to push around. my 84 however has the old style clutch with the bearing and collar at the bottom and she rolls nice and easy.
