Yamaha Cart Trouble

I've gone through this particular thread, but am still having issues with a friend's cart that I'm trying to fix. Said he was backing up when something "popped", followed by some smoke. They parked the cart when that happened.

From what I can tell, the F/R switch, Tow/Run switch, key switch, pedal, and solenoid are all operating correctly, however no movement from the cart. When it is in reverse, the buzzer sounds UNTIL I depress the gas pedal - it then shuts the buzzer off until I release the pedal.

I'm assuming this is either a failed motor or controller. Any advice from y'all on how to diagnose?
