1995 Workhorse won't fire
Helping a firend with a dead workhorse. The plugs will not fire and I tracked it back (I think) to the pulsar. Using an ohm meter I read 20 ohms and when I crank the engine I see nothing although I was expecting to see 1/2 volt ac.
Does that sound like a dead pulsar? Or are there other tests to make? The reason I want to double check is that I am about to spend $89 of my buddies money so I would like to be sure. As supplemental question, has anyone replaced the pulsar on this engine? At present I have just found the wires and connector located between the engine block and the air filter. All I know is the 86 which is of course a totally different beast. Any assistance will be gratefully received. Thanks Dave |

Re: 1995 Workhorse won't fire
Check first the connection of the pulsar to the igniter. Sometimes, it is the igniter that is at fault. Check if igniter is firmly grounded (the middle black wire). While at it, check all wires coming out of the igniter (only 5 of them) and if these are firmly connected to their respective links.

Re: 1995 Workhorse won't fire
Thank you Victorjohn, yes I checked all the connectors and cleaned them up. If I pop the connector on the ignitor I can measure the red/white and black which I think is the pulsar and see 20 ohms. If I then split the connection from the pulsar right behind the air filter I measure there and see the same so I guess the connections are good.
Has anyone out there removed the pulsar? Easy? Impossible? Any tips? Dave |

Re: 1995 Workhorse won't fire
Here is a picture of the pulsar on a 295 that tossed a rod, I assume you are working on a 295 or 350. To change it you will need to pull the shroud off the passenger side and then pull the flywheel off the crankshaft and it bolts to the block behind it with two screws. Not impossible but getting the flywheel off while in the cart maybe fun!
On a side note I dont know how you test the ignitor but I think it is much more common for it to fail than the pulser. |

Re: 1995 Workhorse won't fire
Thank you Blue72 that makes sense. I hear what you say regarding the ignitor and it's all a bit of a gamble but as I said before, the pulsar seems to give no output and the generally accepted wisdom is that it should send out half a volt when cranking. I think I will see if I can get the flywheel off and pull the pulsar out. If I can't then I shall just give it back to my buddy and let him take it to the local repair shop. Fortunately we are close to Everything Carts and they are a bunch of great guys so all will not be lost.
Once again I appreciate your assistance. Dave |

Re: 1995 Workhorse won't fire
The latest is that I got the pulsar out with surprisingly little drama. I spoke with my buddy who elected to get both the pulsar and the ignitor replaced! So he has gone to get the parts and I will replace them one at a time to establish which is faulty. Either way he is happy to end up with a known good spare part.
I will keep you posted. Dave |
