Default Speed Spring questions

I am just starting my g16 build. One of the first things I have done is put in the yamaha speed spring from cartpartsplus.com.

I did a road test before installing the spring and my cart showed 12.8 mph gps, with stock settings on governor. My first run after installing the spring was 13.5 mph. this was also with the spring set at what would have been the "stock" location. The next thing I did was tighten the 10mm nut down to the max speed setting. The cart was at 19.5 mph.

I have read multiple times here and at cartpartsplus that a stock g16 can get 29mph with the spring. I am wondering what factors could be holding me back almost 10mph from the possible results.

My stock cart was running slightly above the 12mph that Yamaha originally sets the governor, so I feel relatively certain that the cart is mechanically solid. I have new spark plug, fuel filter, and air filter. my drive belt measures at almost new.

One thing I am wondering is what distance should I need to travel before reaching that "top speed" point? the area I have to test in is only slightly more than 200ft. is that too short for reaching top end?

Also my gas pedal bottoms out against the front panel of the cart, Is this normal? or am I possibly not getting the throttle open fully because I am bottoming out the pedal?

I have my lift kit and tires ready to install, but would really like to have a better feeling that this mod is installed and working properly before taking that next step.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Would like to help, but don't have experience with that spring. But your doing it right, make the car run before you modify it. Somebody will come in and help!

Make shure your accelerator cables are adjusted correctly. At the accelerator pedal, leave alittle slack in the adjustment, this helps not haveing the lead end or cable brake. The adjustment of cable #2 should have alittle slack also. Not much, just enough that the engine turns over and starts to "spark" before the throttle shaft starts to open. This will give you full throw (wide open throttle) and will stop possible backfireing. Yes it does take more run distance to acheive the highest mph. Good luck on your toy

thanks for the info, I will definitely take a closer look at the cables. May also try to find another place to make a little longer test run, just to see where I am maxing out. wish it was legal to have them on the street here, it would make this testing a lot easier.

i think what you are trying to achive here is not really going to happen for one reason , i think the 29 your looking for is on a lifted cart with 22-23 inch tire , from your avitar your running a stock wheel and tire 18 inch , that is what makes the difference tire size and the spring get you to that number

The cartpartsplus add for the spring actually says

"Stock Yamaha G-16 cart with standard golf cart tires GPS speed @ 29 MPH!!!!!!!!!! Lifted carts even faster!!!"

I'm sure that's probably under optimal conditions, I don't really expect to achieve 29mph anyways. I just want to know that the spring is functioning properly and I am getting everything I can get.

Right now my tests show me at almost 10mph under that which seems a little drastic to me. if I had gotten say 24mph I probably wouldn't think another thing. I suspect though that my actual problem is probably the length of my straight away I'm testing in and not really the cart.

I know when its all done I won't be running the cart wide open much at all and speed is not really an issue for me, I just want to be sure everything is working properly.

Adjust cables like smallblock stated. You will need a lot more than 200ft to get full speed.

yeah I went and read that on the site and i have no idea other than the cables also on yamahas you need to make sure your clutches are fully engaging , yamaha's are notorious for not making it all the way to the top of the primary clutch put cart on jackstands and take the seat off and run the cart to full throttle and watch the belt climb the primary clutch that should be good for 2-5 mph if its thats the problem

Nobuck, have you ever installed a CPP speed spring? How many Yamaha's have you worked on that warrant's "Yamaha's are notorious for not making it all the way to the top of the primary clutch"? Please remember, we all here to help, not hinder.

I'm with Block here, i think Yamaha's run better than most others brands. But with a new cart, you don't know what maint. has been ignored, and some clutch maint. may be required. The point here is, do all maint. while the car is stock. Don't mask a problem with throwing parts at it trying to fix it. Read this site and learn what maint. is required, then build a Hot Rod out of a good running car.
