G2 electrical problem need HELP!
I've started this new thread to try for some help.
New wiring harness, all wire ohms correctly. New starter generator, No grounds to case, 5 ohms at Red and Green. New voltage reg. Unsure, same simptums as original VR. I have tried all recommendations I've found on the site. Here's the facts 13.2 volts at battery prior to starting (all measurements at battery) 11.5 volts while idling, raising to 12.7 volts at full rpm. (My assumption Generator is putting out something) Upon grounding of green wire from VR as suggested, volts drop to 10.5 rather than rising as suggested here. I have tried this with and without a separate ground from the battery to the Engine and Chasse. Any ideas and or suggestions greatly appreciated. Don't know what to do from here. Many thanks, Bob |

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
If you still have the original Hitatchi voltage regulator, it can be adjusted. Take the cover off, loosen the jam nut and turn the screw in or out to adjust voltage. One thing though, when you have it adjusted and put the cover back on, recheck the voltage, for some reason it can change after cover is installed. Good luck

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
Thank you smallblock,
I've tried that and nothing different. Replacement VR but same adjustment capability. What concerns me is that shorting the green wire from VR only DROPS voltage, does not short out across VR and cause momentary voltage increase.. |

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
Silly question, is start/gene wired correctly? Had similar problem and moving positive and negative around fixed it.

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
Thanks,
Are you talking about the main black and red wires or the small wires off the exciter? If I reverse leads, will it try to run backwards? I'll try anything at this point. |

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
I had similar frustrations on a G5. Almost identical symptoms. In my case, the starter wires were reversed. Fat red wire should go to F1 (or maybe F2) and the fat ground wire should go to A1. I tested with an old generator, and found out that the starter runs the same way no matter how you hook it up. (Yes, I had bought a new generator, that didn't solve anything :-( )
Not sure if you have the same issue, but worth a check. |

Re: G2 electrical problem need HELP!
rlaskows,
Thanks for suggestion. Tried reversing leading and nothing different. You are correct, reversing leads does not change rotational direction. Appears to run fine with no excessive heat at generator or cables. With an amp meter, the battery draw at start up seems to be about 19 amps. (drive belt disconnected). With engine reved up about 3 amps. Still nothing different when grounding green wire from generator. re-installed old VR and no difference. I can only assume I have a bad generator. However the two small wires from the generator (exciter field I believe) show 5 ohms as required. any Ideas greatly appreciated. |
