Default 1994 ez go marathon upgrade

I have a 1994 ez go marathon. I have only had it a few months. I replaced all be batteries with Trojans, new 4 guage wires (all). It has the stock motor, controller, FNR switch and not sure on the solenoid. It goes about 12 MPH with me an my son on it. I want to get more out of it. I want it for my hunting lease. Not much hilly terrain. Where do I start. The motor is only a 2hp motor. Can I just replace the motor? Thanks.

These things are just like cars. The more you want to spend the faster it will go.

More voltage with a bigger controller will get you more torque and speed.

A motor will either get you speed are torque but not both.

A higher amp controller will get you more torque.

So I should start with a controller first? What do you think I'll get if I went with like a 8 hp motor instead of the 2 that's on it. I'm just wanting more power around the lease. I don't need to go 25-30. But 15 to 20 would be great.

Without knowing the terrain and what you are saying I would go with a controller first. With that said I would do both at the same time if I could afford it. Putting a 500amp controller on a stock motor can be deadly to the motor. If it gets in a bind and you keep your foot in it the motor will burn up.The stock controller in the cart is a 275amp controller more than likely. A 8hp motor is for a cart at full voltage with not one problem in wiring are other components. A motor HP rate veries as the batteries drop in voltage.Just something to remember when buying.

There is no substitute for voltage!

Ok. It's mainly flat dirt roads some small hills. I Just want some more pulling power. I check my speed last night and it goes 12-13 max on flat ground. I'm looking for more of 15-20. I am willing to replace the controller, motor and Olympus and FR switch. What do I need to get to see much improvement without putting to much money in it. Thanks. I want to get what I need not go somewhere and have someone sell me something I don't need. Thanks for all your help!!

What Andy said about series wound motors, "A motor will either get you speed are torque but not both.", is basically true, but there are some aftermarket motors with physically longer cases the are wound for higher speed, yet produce about the same, or more, torque than the stock length motors. The D&D 170-002-0001 and the AMD 7621 come to mind. Also, Plum Quick appears to have figured out a way to rewind stock sized motors to have both more torque and RPM.

Going to a higher voltage battery pack will increase torque across the motor's entire RPM spectrum as well as increasing the max RPM (top speed).

Installing taller tires will increase speed, but reduces torque.

Installing a higher ampacity controller increases low end torque, but the speed stays the same.

Getting 15-20 MPH on relatively flat dirt road with two people on-board is definitely doable at 36V, but would be easier at 42V or 48V.
