Default Hot solenoid

Been out of a while, hope everyone is doing great!

I noticed recently over the last few days my Heavy Duty SW 180 solenoid has been getting very hot(i.e 170-175*F with laser probe a few inches from it)

Running a custom EMP motor with alltrax xct 500 controller. 2 gauge wires with 42V of power. Cart runs fine, no issues and noticed this by chance.

The solenoid itself is a 36V version with 36V going to the activation terminals and full 42V at the large terminals. Could this be an issue?

Doesn't seem normal but are your 2 ga cables getting hot too? You said its running fine but some kind of resistance is getting it hot

Only one battery wire coming from the top of the solenoid is hot, but no where near as hot as the solenoid. Makes me think the wire is hot due to the solenoid heat.

Any ideas?

Not really because I've never waited around to see if its normal for solenoid cable to get hot after a while of driving lol. Is it hog in the sense that it can burn you or very warm

The cable will not burn just very warm, solenoid on the other hand is possible to burn. Should I just get a new one and see if problem persists?

The Alltrax 500 requires a 400 amp solenoid. Use a 48v version.

I thought the 36V solenoid was ok as we discussed in this thread

It has now become a problem?
In theory a 200a solenoid can handle a 500a solenoid. But there are many factors that cause amp draw in excess of what the little 200 can handle. For this reason Alltrax Engineers mandated a 400a solenoid be used with the 500 amp control. It's in the manual now.

Oh yes, sorry I was not paying attention. Definitely use a 48 volt solenoid if it's a 48 volt car. A 36 volt solenoid will work but if you have upgraded components like your controller then yes get a heavy duty 48 volt solenoid it's putting too much stress on the 36 volt solenoid because you have upgraded components
