Brand new batteries, lugs up hill.
Hi all,
I picked up a 96 CC DS 36v for a song not long ago. The batteries in it were old and worn out. I just put 6 new Trojan T-605’s in it. It’s not super fast, and I don’t expect it to be,about 15 mph on level ground, but it loses ground going up inclines, down to about 10 mph, and I’m thinking it shouldn’t with new strong batteries. What do you all suppose could be the reason? |

1996 36v is a resistor coil cart. I think it's running about right. The new batteries may gain a little power as they 'break in' but, nothing earth shattering.

So, the speed bleed off going uphill is normal?

Normal. 15 mph is fast for that cart. Are you sure it's a resistor cart?

It has a series of coils under a heat shield mounted to a frame cross member behind the batteries.

Re: Brand new batteries, lugs up hill.
Speed was measured by a speedometer app on my smart phone. Seems pretty accurate.

Re: Brand new batteries, lugs up hill.
As mentioned, it will get a little stronger as it breaks in the batteries.

Re: Brand new batteries, lugs up hill.
On another thread someone said you may get better torque up hill with a resistor cart if you don't floor it.
The theory was that when you floor it you activate all the coils and this gives max power for speed but less torque. Feather the accelerator a bit so that you just bring in the first couple of coils and you might get better torque on the hill. I don't have a resistor cart so I can't vouch for that but it's worth a try. |

Re: Brand new batteries, lugs up hill.
I don't believe the resistors will help going uphill at all. The resistors are simply using some of the current so the motor isn't getting it all. Basically, with a resistor cart you are either sending all the power to the motor (accelerator fully depressed) or you are dumping some of it to heat up the resistor coils.
