Default 85 marathon backfire

Hello all,

One of these days I will get this thing running right, but Im not ready to give up just yet.
Got it running good until today whrn I went for a ride. Drove it for about 3 minutes and then it staryed to backfire every time I let off and then pressed the gas again. Sometimes it was a light 'poof' noise but sometimes a pretty decent backfire. Seemed like it all had to do with how hard I press back down on the pedal.

Anyone have any suggestions/answers?

Thanks

Have you got a spring on the throttle cable right on the lever on the carburetor?

No it has no spring there. It was fine until today and now backfires everytime I press the gas pedal. The butterfly on the carb was welded by previous owner in half.
Time for a new carb maybe?

Thanks

Personally I think a new carburetor is a great investment and it made a huge difference to my 86. However you should be aware that without that spring you will still have issues even with the new carburetor.

Thanks Dave!

You have been VERY helpful to me so I thank you for that. Could you please post a picture of the carb and spring you are talking about on here? I havent seen the spring and dont know of another older cart I could look at. It would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Sure thing, it is circled for you. You don't have to use the EZGO part I took the spring out of a ball point pen. All you need to do is compress the spring so that wil your foot off the gas the butterfly is clamped hard shut. The spring is also neccessary to enable the correct operation of the governor.
