What Racin said. We have all been there. When you are done you can stand tall amongst your fellow men, stare at the horizon through eyes of granite and proudly say "Yep did all that myself".

The actual top end rebuild doesn't seem all that difficult. It's the crackshaft seals that have me worried.

Matt,
Yes indeed it is not easy but many folks have done it and we want you to join our happy band.
The mechanics of the job are very easy, you just require two pullers. One you can make yourself and the other is a cheap steering wheel puller. What makes the job more difficult than it should be is the fact that the clutch and the flywheel will be frozen onto the crankshaft. That said, the liberal application of PB Blaster (or a similar spray), some brute force, a spot of Lord's name taking of in vain followed by the copious application of tears of bitter rage will get these things apart. If you do replace the top end you must replace those seals and we are all here to help.

Took me three days to get my flywheel off (at great amusement to Brew City Music I believe) followed by two days to get a stubborn crank seal out (at great amusement to Mr. Box I believe).

My rebuild thread is here - I think I had pretty much problems with everything but the clutch removal, so you may find it helpful.

And Please don't forget to put BLUE loctite on the seals outer edge or around the crankcase when installing. Also lube the rubber area with some grease so on installation it's not dry. Remember when you remove the flywheel side you will see the pulser coil and plate it will have to be removed to change that seal. 2 little screws holding the plate. There centered on the plate RIGHT ? reinstall the plate in the very same location. Just a heads up so you know what to look for.
