Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
Seems like the inlet needle and seat are bad in the carb, the float level is adjusted too high or the float does not float anymore. Either one will allow too much gas into the float bowel. You will have to remove the carb and dismantle it to check this.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
There is not much to these carbs, very basic in operation. Besides the needle and seat there is a gasket or two and the throttle shaft and bushings that get worn. Soak the dismantled carb in carb cleaner for an hour or two then rinse and inspect to make sure its all clean and the small passageways are clear. Reassemble with new gaskets and the needle and seat, adjust your float height and you are good to go. The throttle shaft and bushings if worn have to be replaced as well.

Re: 1983 g1 starting problems
If you know the timing is good, I'd try a different carb. Maybe someone here has a spare you could "try" for diagnosis. I have one, but it's not complete. Look on the side of the carb for the numbers. There were a few different versions that it could be. Maybe I could send you this one I have and you could "piece" it together?
