Even with the jet kit it will still run too lean with out the factory air box. A problem I am still dealing with. I have to hold the choke 1/2 closed in order to get it to run right. There just isn't enough fuel possible for these carbs to run right with an open air filter. I know it's bad news but at least you didn't drop money in to find this out. I have the stock filter back on but the housing won't fit because of other things in the way so I wrapped 1/2 the air filter in a rag and gorilla tape to cut out 1/2 the air it's getting. The performance jet kit from CPP makes quite a difference on the bottom end and always have. But with any filter that makes you get rid of the housing you won't get any thing over 1/2 throttle. It's been a nightmare. Right now I've been taking time to try different carbs from different ATV's and bikes. I'll report as I find stuff but for now nothing to report other then get a new air filter keep it clean and don't shy away from the performance jet kit for $11 it isn't a waist even if you end up swapping carbs cause the low end you gain while you are still running it. And you can always ebay the carb if you swap it out.

Mine runs great after I jetted it, I have the stock airbox but at times ran it with only the top and filter in it and took all the other parts out/off it. I doubt it would matter what I did with it. I filed my jet out until it ran right don't know what size it is. But the only thing that seemed to make any difference was taking that silencer off over the generator, removing other parts from the box didn't change it but that made a big difference.

Sounds like you need to open the main jet more. I did this years ago before the big block in my G9, ran great with no air box, just a k&n on the carb.

Ron you are the man. Walk me through it if you don't mind I'd love to get this fixed right. For now I just wrapped up 1/2 my air filter and it bugs me but it runs pretty good. Seriously I'm all ears and if you are willing to walk me thru it I'll do it in a heart beat.

I gutted my air box (nothing inside but the filter and foam). Removed the snorkel on the side as well. Drilled the jet to .042. Got alot of bottom end and some mid range. You jet to altitude, and performance mods. I run at 1100 feet elevation, But also take it to 6500/8000 ft. and its lazy, but still runs. The higher the elevation, the smaller jet needed.

Hope this helps! I'm with Ron, jet bigger! Then read the plug.

This is what worked on my G9 285cc. Opened the main jet to .042" (same as Mike, yep read the plug). Removed the air box and installed a K&N filter right on the carb. Same filter Tom at CPP sells. Last I modified the muffler by cutting a window in the side, removing the tiny diameter tailpipe and one baffle. Replaced with larger diameter pipe to increase flow. With the torque spring from CPP and 22" tires it would run 30mph on the flat.

Best pics I could find...click to enlarge.
