Default EZGO workhorse ..good choice?

I am new to your forum and may have posted the below thread in the wrong section. I am duplicating in the BB heading. Sorry for the mistake.

You guys have done a great job getting me excited about a buggy project. I have started searching for my first victim and hope your communities experience can keep me from making some mistakes. I have found a 2002 EZGO workhorse with a bad engine. The car is complete and in fair/good condition by my standards. It is a doner vehicle for what I hope to be a big block woods ride. I can pick it up for $500. Is this a fair price and is the unit a good candidate for a big twin swap? Is it more expensive to build vs. Yamaha or Club Car......?thanks for any help/advice.

Sounds like a good choice to me. If that is the normal work cart it is just a longer wheelbase cart with a box or bed. It has the most room for big engines and ezgo have the largest selection of modified parts. I'd guess they are cheaper to do if anything, except there is more stuff you can buy.

Just because I'm new does'nt mean I'm dumb. I have looked for a while and was ready to pay much more for a base cart. The workhorse upgrade was out of my budget. Just got real lucky. I e-mailed the dude looking for a doner cart and he offered it to me on his reply. If I could only be that lucky in Vegas I would be buying a new one. I will be looking into big blocks when or if I sell my Honda CRF250R. Anyone interested????

You can fit a 35hp B&S in those, but more coin. That is the best advantage is the engine room, and they look nice with a big lift.

Crank shaft question. My brother has an oportunity to buy a Vanguard 18 hp for me. I see from the B&S web site they have several different shaft sizes. I know there is a clutch replacement with the conversion. Can someone tell me the shaft size I should be looking for?

I have been saving for one of the CPP kits. However, if this engine has the right size crank shaft, it would save me some major coin!

There are a lot of bad azz workhorse carts. It's a great platform for a bb engine, even ezgo thought so and came up with the ST480.
You need a straight shaft engine 1" or(+) dia. I'm thinking the shafts are around 2.5" long and longer. to fit a clutch on it. There is also a 110 taper shaft on some engines, this is what ezgo uses on their clutches. seem like the most common engine shaft is what they call generator taper and these don't readily work with any clutch setup I know of

I am basically following the same path you are.

Bought a blown motor Workhorse, check

Wondering of the one I have is going to work, check.

Seriously, I bought a nice Briggs v twin off c-list that has only been run as a
back up gen motor for a cell tower. In fact the guy still has one, and I may
get it too.

It has a long (5+") taper shaft, from what I have learned here from the Big Block
Masters is a red handed left child..BUT, can be machined to a more suitable
shaft for clutches.
Since I can, I am going to have it ground to the EZ GO most popular
taper.
Some might have it machined to the 1", because that is probably the
more performance desired shaft size.

The question is, what does the shaft on the motor you're looking at
look like, and can it ..(if need be) be machined into a suitable
shaft ?

Ask your brother to measure it, or better yet, whip out a camera and
email you a pic of the shaft..(measure is better..)

Anyway.. I fixed my engine, and it runs so dang good..I am going to
gather all my goods together (big block stuff) add my engine (with machined crank) and get another frame, and start from
there.
