2000 club car
Hi, can anyone tell me
is it normal for the engine to continue to run and cant be turned off with key with the drive belt missing. only way to stop it is turning fuel flow valve off. I was replacing the generator drive belt for a friend and went to test it. this is when i noticed this condition. thanks |

Club car has a magneto ignition system that is killed by grounding the coil.
It is activated by the bottom microswitch behind the shift lever under the seat. You need to follow that circuit and determine if you have a loose/broken wire or bad microswitch. The top microswitch activates the start circuit when the pedal is pushed. |

Thanks, i did not think it was normal.
unfortunately, i am doing this friend a favor and know it seems this buggy may have had some serious preexisting issues they did not tell me about. |

Actually, the microswitches behind the shift lever have nothing to do with the ignition kill. The one on the outside by the yellow knob activates power to the solenoid when the key is turned on. The one closest to the body is for the reverse buzzer.
Inside the black box next to the battery there are 2 more microswitches. These are the ones you want. The one on top runs from the solenoid/key microswitch by the shifter. This opens when you push the gas pedal down and completes the circuit to activate the solenoid. The one on the bottom is the one you need to test. It’s the one with the black/white wire. This is what will close when you release the pedal and kill spark. This is the circuit you need to pay attention to in particular. This black/white wire runs through the harness, along the starter/generator and there is a bullet connector somewhere near the oil dipstick tube. If this connection is bad or unplugged, it won’t shut off when you release the pedal regardless of the microswitch. From there it plugs into the rev limiter (little box just above the oil drain hole). Again make sure it’s connected here. From there it runs out of that box on the drivers side into the motor where it plugs into the ignition coil. This entire circuit from the microswitch to the coil is what you need to inspect. The other wire on that microswitch should be a black wire and go to ground. With no ground on this wire the rest of that circuit is completely worthless. |

Great information guys, this is the beauty of the forum.
someone has experienced the problem before. Yes i did some research and found some great wiring and detailed test procedures from here www.Manualslib.com. there are 3 ways to kill engine, key off, gas pedal up, and neutral lock-out switch, of course in any case, if ground is missing then engine races. i will be headed up north this weekend to check it out thanks for the help. |
