possible to go too fast downhill?
My speed chip just got here this morning, and had a quick question before I go play!
Is it possible to go too fast down a hill and "explode" the motor? I know they don't like to be over-revved, and just wanted to make sure I don't hurt anything. |

Ok, cart is a good bit faster now!
Important clarification: how fast is too fast? 30? 35? |

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
You need not worry with just a speed chip. That alone isn't going to do it. Have to be a pretty steep hill.... a very steep hill. 30-35 should be just fine.

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
I think it is safe to say some caution should be exercised.....I have seen more than one golf cart motor exploded going downhill that never went much more than 35mph? Lets just say at 30mph and stock tires you are going 2 times the original motor rpm....

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
8000 rpm is about as fast as these will run before approaching the critical stage and probably won't blow up until 9 or 10K.
Your motor probably won't get to anything over 5000 downhill before you have to change your shorts. I wouldn't worry too much. |

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
If you are running the stock sized tires the chances of exploding are greater. Larger than stock tires is what I was thinking. I have blown a motor but it was running close to 50 miles per hour.

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
So, you're saying I need bigger tires? For safety, right?

Re: possible to go too fast downhill?
That's what you tell the wife!
Be sure the golf course allows big tires and 40-50mph first Be careful. I don't trust the steering, tires and brakes over 20-30mph. The brake cables do break on occasion, then you have half of one side to slow you down... |
