What would cause a battery terminal to melt?

I had the battery of my old F100 truck get hot enough to melt. It turned out to be a very dirty ground wire from the battery to the engine. I cleaned it up and had no further trouble. I have to vote with the other posters that suggested a loose connection somewhere. Could it have been a bad cable between the two batteries? Perhaps a bad crimp?

Is the young lady dragging the brake with one foot while stepping on the go peddle with the other?

Or holding it on a hill with the gas instead of the brake?

Wow! I sure do appreciate everyone replying as quickly as you have.
Let me look into the foot dragging issue there Doomsman.
As far as holding it on a hill with the gas instead of the brake Scottyb. I'm going to check to see if any of the kids have been foolin around.

Tomorrow I'm going to call up the cart repair shop and see what they say. The wires were definitely all tight because I'd had this happen a couple weeks back. I figure it'll be long odds to get it covered under warranty.
MDLNBR probably has it right; I'll see about replacing my cables and maybe that'll fix the problem. Would large cables be even better?

Anyone know whether I can just patch the hole in the battery case and drill a hole for a new wire stud? I'd read about it around here but wasn't sure if it would cause problems with the other batteries or if it would be a good long term fix.
I saw a post where the gentleman patched his battery with epoxy mix and seemed to think it would be okay. That'd sure make me feel better than having to shell out another $175.

Why take the chance with patching it(battery) up? You could end up causing more damage than you want. Better get a new battery, or at the very least, purchase a used battery. That would still be better than attempting a "fix" that may or may not solve the battery problem.
