Re: Brake lights stay on
The first thing you have to figure out is what type of brake switch you have. I've attached a few drawings to give you an idea of how the basic circuit works. I have noted that there are many different ways to supply power to the brake lights. My cart has a pressure membrane mounted behing the rubber brake pedal pad. It is a simple on off switch. Press the pedal lights on, release the pedal lights off. This type of switch is a bit tricky on occasion because the membrane switch can be closed by the simple pressure of the rubber pad being a bit too tight. The second type of set up involves one or more microswitches. They most likely are mounted under the floor and attached to the pedal group. Press the brake one of them closes and lights the lights. Push the park brake and the other one opens turning off the lights. I have also seen a system of one microswitch, and a timer, mounted to the break cable assembly near the pedal group. This system times out after a period of time and turns off the brake lights. I have also sent a pic of another system that attaches to the pedal group. It's a plastic encased switch with a tab that moves in a slot when the pedal is moved. This turns the light on/off and also has a built in time delay.
You will also note that all of these methods involve a brake relay that is mounted behind the dash. The relay picks up when the brakes are pushed and drops out when the brakes are released...unless the timer keeps the relay picked up. On my cart the contacts failed closed so the lights would not go out. Replaced the less than $5 relay and everything works ok. PM me if you want to discuss the issue further or if you think I have something wrong in my diagram. |
