You are better off with the 9:1 gears! That is what I have in mine. That is still a big change over stock.

Is this a huge job to do by myself? I know you need a press but I dont know what seals/bearings need to be replaced in the process. Id imagine I'll need to download a manual. No shop here wants to do the job. Any info before i tackle a job like that would be great. Thanks all!

I can't tell you because my cart came with 9:1 gears installed from a Yamaha dealer.
