Re: 1990 EZGO Marathon
I'm semi-seriously mulling over a JD hydrostatic/2 speed rear end option. That would give me hydraulics for a cargo box and other purposes. It would also have a cat 0 3 point hitch (no idea what I'd use that for but I'd think of something). I have everything I'd need for the swap if I was willing to sacrifice one of my JD 400's. I have three of them so it's not like I'd be fresh out if I did that. One of them is a beater tractor that I use for work that causes scratches and dings. The other two have been ground up restored so they're not on the list of candidates. The problem is the bolt pattern on JD 400 rear hubs is goofy. They're 6 bolt and an odd bolt circle so my choice of wheels would be stock rims or ..stock rims. I'd need a big twin engine too. Anything less would be a pig with a heavy duty hydrostat behind it.
Here's my personal web site link. I have some pics and info on there about my garden tractor projects. The 400's are at the top. Some of my other toys are on the site too. http://www.gofastgarage.com/gardentractors.htm |

Re: 1990 EZGO Marathon
I'd have to check but my Dad had a Cub-Cadet that i believe was a hydro-stat.It had a 14hp briggs v-twin and 4on4 bolt pattern(same as carts).I'll find out and post the info. You could run a 3-point on the front and attach things like a plow. The Bobcat utility-machine has a quik-hitch system on the front.Hope this helps.

Re: 1990 EZGO Marathon
Go with the Hydrostatic drive, you got it and it's paid for.
You mention your uses for the cart and the Hydrostatic drive while not a speed setup will provide an infinant variable speed drive system with plenty of torque available even from a 9 hp. Even though you might have an odd bolt pattern on the drum, what is the rim size? Plenty of different tread design tires out there. JD 400 is hyd. steering isn't it? Would be cool to adapt that onto the front of the cart if needed to level the frame after the rear drive goes in. Do it and post plenty of pictures, sounds interesting and we can walk you through anything needed. Being a tracter guy, you probably won't need us but it would be enjoyable to watch. |
