Oldi but Goody Problem!
I just purchased an 1984 EG go Textron with 2 cyl Gas Motor and Centrifugal Clutch.
When I go up a hill the motor seems to run at a high rpm (with accelerator down) but it barely pulls its self (and me) up the hill. How can I tell if the clutch needs repair, replacement or etc.? |

Re: Oldi but Goody Problem!
2 cyl gas motor? Did you mean 2 stroke gas motor?
I would put the car on axle stands or blocks. Now start the engine and gently rev the engine. The clutch on the engine should close up and the clutch on the rear axle should open up. Does this happen? If so your clutches are good. It is very common that the belt stretches and wears and this will give the symptoms you describe. Assuming that you do have the 2PG 2stroke engine (and someone has not installed a 2 cylinder engine) then the belt will be 45 inches long. You can get them from NAPA on line as well as many other places. You could also consider putting on a slightly shorter belt. This will increase torque and give you better hill climbing ability. A very nice belt for the 84 car is a DAYCO HP 3004. This is the belt I use and it is a heavy duty snowmobile belt. Dave |

you will need to disassemble and inspect them but check the belt and see if it is in specks first, easy and cheap first. |

Re: Oldi but Goody Problem!
Thanks for the advice and instructions! I will do as you suggest and see if the clutch opens and closes as outlined. It it does, then I'll assume that the belt is the culprit. Also, thanks for the belt nomenclature. If it is the belt, can I simply pry it off the clutch housing and put the new one on the same way?

Re: Oldi but Goody Problem!
Oh yes! Again you were right! The engine is a 2 cycle not 2 cylinder type motor.

Re: Oldi but Goody Problem!
Yes just grab a bit of belt and pull it over the edge of the pulley, then rotate the pulley by hand and wind the belt off. It is real easy.
