Or worse, salvage yards that carve them up, if some cells are damaged due to the wreck, and mix and match different capacities, ages, remaining lives, etc.

This may not be possible, as I don't know enough about them. I've just seen one Tesla pack before, besides the pics here.

You can make packs with any number of modules.
You're absolutely correct. The leaf cells offer a LOT of flexibility. The VOLT batteries are the correct width to fit in a stock battery tray so you can still use them, but if you want anything that isn't a multiple of 6 cells then it's a pain.
