Default 1982 EZGO 2pg muffler question

So I'm trying to quiet down my 1982 Marathon 2pg gasser and I am being cheap. Can a guy take a 4 cycle lawn mower muffler and weld it to the outlet end of the existing coffee can.

What does everyone think? (yes I am cheap)

I think you would change the back pressure by doing that and it wouldn't run as good. The 2 strokes require a certain amount of back pressure which the current muffler is designed for. Any more or less restriction gets it out of optimal range.

Does the outlet of your muffler have a small pipe a few inches or so sticking out of it? If it has rusted off (like most of them I have seen) you can weld a short piece of 3/4" black pipe to it and it will return it to mostly stock sound without affecting the backpressure. I even gained a bit of pep when I did this to my 77!

Thanks, never even looked, will check it out when I pull it out to overhaul the engine in the coming weeks
