DS engine keeps dying
2000 DS engine will quit running after it's driven about a 1/2 block. If you keep the pedal mashed down it will start right back up when it just about stops rolling. It may go 10-15 feet and do it again or it may go another 1/2 block before it does it and it will keep doing it over and over. I unhooked the rev limiter and that didn't help at all. I first thought it was a bad fuel pump and installed a new one but that didn't fix it. I then put an electric pump to see if I had gotten a bad new pump but that didn't fix it either.

Re: DS engine keeps dying
Maybe a bad ignition coil. Hook a timing light up on the spark plug wire and drive it. Don't worry about actual timing marks or anything, just look for the light to flash. When it dies, see if it is still flashing or not. IF so, then sounds like a fuel problem, maybe time to clean the carb really well. If not, sounds like it's probably time for a new coil.
IF it is a coil, ONLY get an OEM coil. Should run around $125 or so for a genuine kawasaki coil. If you save a few bucks and go with an aftermarket coil you'll be replacing it again very soon. You will probably have to pull the engine to replace the coil. |

Re: DS engine keeps dying
I'll borrow a timing light tomorrow and give that a try. Thanks

Re: DS engine keeps dying
Drive it until it acts up, Pull the plug wire off and stick a new spark plug in the wire and crank it over. See if you have consistent blue spark.
Could be a fuel delivery issue if the vent for the fuel bowl is clogged or if the float is stuck and not letting enough fuel into the bowl. The bowl vent is on top of the carb by the throttle lever, it points forward toward the front of the le cart. There is supposed to be a hose on it but sometimes they fall off. Sometimes bugs build a nest in the hose or the vent nipple on the carb gets dirt in it so the bowl can’t ventilate, it will not let fuel pump into the bowl to fill it up. |

Re: DS engine keeps dying
Could also be fuel tank vent plugged by insects, loosen or remove fuel cap and try it

Re: DS engine keeps dying
I checked the tank vent and that wasn't it and also the carb overflow line was clear all the way into the carb.

Re: DS engine keeps dying
If you take the fuel line off, is there lots of fuel flowing? Some dink hasn't turned the fuel shut off on you? I have also seen the straw fall off the pick up tube in the tank. Maybe sucking air?
