Question Crank & Rod Exchange? Dumb question?

I have a KF82 flathead motor that seized. I either need a crank & rod or I can send my crank in to J&M Golf Carts and they will send me a machined crank and rod.

I’m not a machinist so maybe this will sound stupid?

My confusion is that I can’t figure out how J&M can take an old crank and a standard rod and machine them to match. I don’t see any undersize rods available for the KF82 flathead so how can this be done? If you have to machine the old crank (making its journal smaller), and also machine a standard rod (making its journal larger), how can this possibly work?

Must be doing something with special journal bearings?

This motor doesn’t use bearings. It’s straight journal-to-rod contact. But it’s possible...?

Not sure about their process. There are a very limited number of shops that will even work on a small crank like this. Typically they weld up the journal(add material) then resize it (cut to size). However the heat may warp the crank. It then needs to be placed in a fixture to straighten it. This will bend it back into tolerance and roundness. With the building up of the crank they can then bore the rod to match.

Got my refurbished crank and rod back from them and I still can't tell what exactly they did.

If I had to make my best guess I imagine that they must have access to undersize connecting rods for these motors.
