I have not dug in that deeply. If I have any of those issues its.. big block time!

On another note, it was at my dads and he said it started running progressively worse so I doubt its that catastrophic but.. I have seen crazier things..

Not to dampen your bigblock ideas, but a sheared key is quite an easy fix (once you can get to the flywheel), if that's what it turns out to be. Easy to check with a timing light without removing the motor.

'Progressively worse' could be the flywheel continuing to move on the crankshaft and put the spark timing farther and farther away from where it belongs.

Or a worn intake valve

Nothing is catastrophic on these motors unless the counterbalance weight lets loose and creates a giant hole in the back of the motor. Otherwise even a “semi-catastrophic” failure like a broken rod, you can rebuild the entire engine and be back in business for under $150 and a few hours time.
