Default Armature and Battery Regen - Alltrax

I’ve been searching for info on the difference between armature and battery Regen settings for the Alltrax controller. Not a lot of content out there and the manual says that they’re usually set to the same value. I started experimenting but would love to know more about what I’m actually doing.

My goal with Regen is to keep speed under control on big hills and to save brakes. When I take Regen (both values) above 75 amps, i get the kind of hill control I want but slowing down is very bumpy. I tried taking the armature max to 120 amps and the battery max to 60. That seems to give me both hill control and less jerkiness.

Would love for someone to explain the difference between the settings and what to expect when they’re not the same value.

Default Re: Armature and Battery Regen - Alltrax

The Altrax XCT Controller modulates the Armature Regen current using PWM the same way it modulates the Armature Motoring current while driving.

The "Max Regen Battery Amps" will control the maximum regen brake effect at higher speeds.

The "Max Regen Armature Amps" will control the maximum regen brake at lower speeds when the controller is able to run a higher Armature current at a lower voltage and modulate the battery current.

I have my "Regen Armature amps" set to 220 amps and my "Regen Battery amps" set to 120 amps.

That gives me a smoother brake effect from high speeds and it increases the Regen brake as the cart slows down.

The "Throttle Rate" setting also applies during Regen and it controls how quick the Controller will reach the maximum Regen current, my throttle rate is set to 40%.
