Rear diff. Humbling question
This forum has been a great help to me. I really thought I was learning at a rapid pace. But, today, I was humbled by the simplest of projects. I could feel a slight side to side movement in the rear of the cart on pavement. (almost like a slightly bent wheel or out of balance tire. So I jacked up the rear and slowly accelerated. I can see a very slight movement of the tires side to side. Bear in mind I use this cart only on the golf course and it feels fine on grass. Anyway, I decided it wasn't bad enough to mess with. But while I had it jacked up, The thought crossed my mind to change the differential oil. However, I am confused about how to refill the fluid once I drain it. There is a single plug that the manual shows as a "Drain/Fill" Plug. Its on the lower left bottom of the Diff.Housing. I really don't understand how once drained (if it will all drain while jacked up in the rear) how one can get oil back in it from that same bottom plug. I am embarrassed and humble but have to ask for help on this one.
It's a 2003 txt, series, fleet cart, late production. Single drain/ fill port on bottom left of diff. Last edited by GOLFERDAN; 03-06-2017 at 12:11 PM.. Reason: additional info. |

Re: Rear diff. Humbling question
To completely drain the differential you have to unbolt and remove the pan. Although it is completely doable by the average handyperson, it is a big job. I would recommend just topping up til the oil flows out of the threaded plug. Do a search on differential oil. There are numerous threads.

Re: Rear diff. Humbling question
Yep, thanks guys. I researched the site after I posted the question. (obviously something I should have done before. Lesson learned) Found the same link as rib recommended. Only way to drain is by removing the pan then it seems best to fill the pan while it is off, re rtv and try to replace without spilling it. Think I'm going to use 80/90 gear oil unless anyone thinks that's not right.

Re: Rear diff. Humbling question
Sounds good. I use 30wt oil with 1-2 oz stp oil treatment to stick to the gears and keep the top ones coated even after they have sat for awhile... I overfill above the drain plug too - It never hurts to have a little extra lubricant in the diff.

Re: Rear diff. Humbling question
Is there any parts / repair manual on how the differential and axle shafts are connected? Is there anything else I should do in there while the axle is off the cart and I'm replacing fluid? O-rings, or bearings?

Re: Rear diff. Humbling question
The attached PDF file is a oil manufacture's brochure that pushes their brand, but it contains a good explanation of the differences between motor oil and gear oil.
Also attached is a chart the shows the different yardsticks used for motor and gear oils. IE: The viscosity of SAE-30 motor oil and SAE-85W gear oil is about the same even though the numbers aren't. I'm using SAE 85W-140 gear oil at the present, but will be changing to synthetic SAE 75W-90 gear oil this summer. After a few attempts to get the pan with oil in it in place without spilling, I gave up a got an pump an my local auto store. Something akin to this: https://www.amazon.com/Plews-55001-L...words=oil+pump I installed the empty pan and filled through the drain plug with the pump, but manage to overfill above the drain plug opening by tilting the cart. IIRC, the L-R tire was on ground and R-R tire was jacked up about a foot off the ground and I got about 12 Oz in before it overflowed through the drain plug opening. |
