What about a little heat? Or is that a no no for motor studs?

I have found that using the combination of a heat gun and a good quality penetrating oil seems to give you the best of both worlds when freeing corroded fasteners. Just make sure that the stud is not turning when breaking the nut off ... copper studs can easily twist off ... ask me how I know ... it cost me a new solenoid last year when twisting off a main terminal.

I have also seen videos where a wax candle was melted into rusted wheel nuts / studs with excellent results. I personally have not had to use this approach but I certainly is worth a try if you are running out of options.

Another trick that has worked well for me is a 50/50 mix of either acetone or MEK with automatic transmission fluid. I learned it from the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA). I have a '31 chevy on which the bumper spacer medallions were hopelessly stuck. Picture a tapered metal shell about the length and shape of a thumb with a thin, stainless steel shell placed over it. Eighty some years of corrosion and corruption mated the two as though welded the entire surface face. Dislodging without destroying was impossible. A several day soak in the acetone/transmission fluid mix and every one of all six pieces slid gently apart.

The same trick worked with my fuel tank sending unit; delicate brass gears brazed on thin steel shafts, all stuck and oxidized, again impossible to wiggle/wobble loose without destroying. For applications where parts cannot be soak-bathed I've brushed it on and let it soak.

Best Regards,

Tom

I’ve used the ATF mix as well works great. But if I can use a torch I always will.

True! I use it for stubborn residue in firearms barrels. The lady of the house always knows when that happens.
