Default Replaced batteries?

I have a 1984 DS resistor cart, it started to not climb hills and was real slow in reverse and sometimes bucked a little when taking off. I had batteries replaced last week. The cart seems to be the same just not as bad as it was before the batteries were replaced. Still has difficulty climbing small hills and won't even get to close to the hills it climbed before. Could the motor being going bad? Is there something else it could be? Thanks in advance.
